A cloud against a black sky

I’ve always wanted to see the Northern Lights, and every time there’s an alert for unusual sunspot activity, I keep an eye on weather forecasts.

Last night, the lights were visible as far south as London - apparently.

Living in an urban area, with a medium-sized city to the north means that light pollution is always a problem, so we headed down to the top left hand corner of the Wirral where we should have had a clear view north over the Irish Sea.

Aside from the flashing red lights of the windfarm (which never usually bother me), it was quite dark, and we sheltered behind a sand dune.

Did we see the lights? I’m not sure. Perhaps the sky was tinted a little but it’s hard to be sure.

Taking a longer exposure photo probably would have helped, but that’s not the same as actually seeing the phenomenon with my own eyes.
